When you're starting out, the plugin world can feel like a shop window you can't afford. The good news is that you can build a capable setup for $0, and if you do buy something, there are ways to get more for your money. Plugin Boutique is one of the biggest plugin stores, and it has a large free section alongside its paid catalog.

This guide covers what's free there, how the store's free gift and Virtual Cash work, and how to avoid buying plugins you don't need. Everything below was checked on Plugin Boutique's own site and help center in October 2026. Offers change often, so treat specific products as a snapshot and confirm on the site.

Step 1: Start with the free plugins section

Plugin Boutique's Free Plugins page collects free instruments and effects, curated by its team. You need a free Plugin Boutique account to download them. The products then live in your account library alongside their licences.

You can filter the free section by category: EQ, compressors, delays, limiters, distortion, synths, Kontakt instruments, metering, utilities and more. Products we saw listed in October 2026 included:

  • Helm by Matt Tytel: a free polyphonic synth with a step sequencer and arpeggiator, and a good one for learning how synths work.

  • BasiQ by Kuassa: a simple EQ.

  • ComBear by W. A. Production: a compressor.

  • Width Knob by Boz Digital Labs: one-knob stereo widening.

  • Filterjam by AudioThing: a creative filter effect.

  • Ample Guitar M Lite by Ample Sound: a sampled acoustic guitar based on the Martin D-41.

Beginner tip: don't download 40 plugins on day one. Grab one EQ, one compressor, one reverb or delay, and one synth, and learn them well. Your DAW's built-in plugins already cover a lot of this.

Step 2: Check the Best of Free VST Plugins Bundle

The free section also includes the Best of Free VST Plugins Bundle, listed at FREE. It's a curated collection from well-known developers. When we checked, it included:

  • Instruments: Ample Guitar M Lite II, Surrealistic MG-1 Plus (Cherry Audio), TAL-U-NO-62, Pendulate (Newfangled Audio), Tyrell, MSoundFactoryPlayer (MeldaProduction), and Heavyocity's FOUNDATIONS Piano and FOUNDATIONS Emotive Choir.

  • Effects: Ambience reverb (Smartelectronix), Tube Saturator Vintage (Wave Arts), Filterjam (AudioThing), Magic Switch chorus (Baby Audio), Formant (Minimal Audio), Kilohearts Essentials, and Blue Cat's Freeware Plug-ins Pack II.

  • Mixing and mastering: Ozone EQ (iZotope) and EQ Academy (Mastering The Mix), an interactive EQ ear-training plugin.

  • A full DAW: Waveform Free by Tracktion.

For a beginner, that's close to a complete starter studio. Waveform Free gives you somewhere to make music. Kilohearts Essentials covers everyday effects, Ozone EQ handles tone shaping, and EQ Academy trains your ears, which is the skill that matters most.

Step 3: Understand the free gift with purchase

If you do decide to buy something, Plugin Boutique runs a free gift with purchase. According to its official free-gift page, the lineup in October 2026 was:

Order value

Gift you can choose

Any paid purchase

Moogerfooger MF-109S Saturator by Moog

At least $79 / £79 / €79

Synthesizer V Studio 2 Core by Dreamtonics (AI vocal synthesis)

At least $99 / £99 / €99

Melodyne 5 Essential by Celemony (pitch and timing editing)

The gift lineup is updated regularly and is marked "limited time only," so check the current offer before you buy.

The rules, from Plugin Boutique's help center:

  • You need a registered account, and the cart must contain a paid product. Free products don't count.

  • You choose the gift with Show Gifts in the cart sidebar. Don't add the gift product to your cart yourself.

  • It's one free gift per transaction. To get more than one, make separate qualifying purchases.

  • Coupons can cost you the gift. If a coupon brings your total below the gift's minimum, the gift is removed, and the cart tells you.

  • Virtual Cash doesn't. Using Virtual Cash to bring the total below the minimum doesn't affect the gift. However, paying the entire order with Virtual Cash or a coupon makes it ineligible.

  • Rent-to-own plans don't qualify, and if you already own the gift, you can't swap it for something else.

Is it worth it? Only if you were going to buy the paid plugin anyway. A free gift is a bonus, not a reason to spend. If you're interested in AI vocals, though, Synthesizer V Studio 2 Core is worth knowing about. Plugin Boutique describes it as using the same engine as Synthesizer V Studio 2 Pro, and you can write melodies and lyrics directly onto MIDI notes inside your DAW.

Step 4: Use Virtual Cash

Plugin Boutique's loyalty scheme, Virtual Cash, gives you 5% back on each transaction as store credit, according to its help center. You can apply any amount of your balance at checkout, or save it up until it covers a whole plugin. You can see your balance in the Rewards section of your account library or at checkout.

The store also advertises a tiered Plugin Boutique Membership loyalty program with perks such as discounts, monthly free plugins and increased Virtual Cash. Check the site for the current tiers and conditions before counting on any of them.

A simple $0 starter setup

If you're starting from nothing, this setup costs $0:

  1. A DAW: Waveform Free from the bundle above. Or see our guide to free DAWs for women producers starting out, which covers BandLab, Cakewalk Sonar and Reaper.

  2. A synth: Helm, or Vital from our directory.

  3. Effects: Kilohearts Essentials, plus the free Valhalla Supermassive for big reverbs.

  4. Mixing: Ozone EQ and the free dynamic EQ TDR Nova.

  5. Ear training: EQ Academy.

Then finish three tracks before you buy anything. You'll learn what's actually missing, and that's the plugin worth paying for. When you get there, read our guide to AI mastering vs human mastering.

How to avoid plugin overload

  • Buy for a problem, not a feeling. "My vocals sound harsh" is a reason to buy. "This sale ends tonight" isn't.

  • Use trials. Many paid plugins offer demos. Use one on a real project before buying.

  • Check what you already own. Your DAW's stock plugins and the free bundle may already do the job.

  • Keep a wishlist, and revisit it after a week. Most impulse wants fade.
