Mastering is the last creative step before release. It shapes your final mix's overall tone, loudness, and consistency so the track holds up next to everything else on a playlist. Until recently that meant hiring a mastering engineer. Now AI services and plugins can master a track in minutes, often for the cost of a sandwich. So which should you use? Short answer: it depends on the track, the budget, and how much feedback you want. Here's how to decide.
What AI mastering does
AI mastering tools analyse your mix and apply processing automatically, usually EQ, compression, stereo adjustments, and limiting, aimed at a target sound or a reference track. There are two main kinds:
Online services: you upload a WAV and download a master. Examples: LANDR and eMastered.
Plugins in your DAW: an assistant suggests a mastering chain that you can then tweak. Example: iZotope Ozone.
Prices we checked on each vendor's site in October 2026:
Tool | Type | Price |
|---|---|---|
LANDR | Online | Free account; single AI master $10 without a subscription; subscription plans with a 3-day free trial (tier prices weren't shown on LANDR's pricing page when we checked) |
eMastered | Online | Free preview; Unlimited $39/mo monthly, or $15/mo billed yearly ($180 upfront); prices exclude VAT |
iZotope Ozone 12 | Plugin | Elements $55, Standard $219, Advanced $499; free trial |
RoEx Automix | Online mix + master from stems | 1 free mix download; $7.99 per download; Pro $12.50/mo billed annually |
Where AI mastering shines
Speed. You get a result in minutes, which is ideal when you're releasing often or testing ideas.
Cost. A single LANDR master is $10, and Ozone Elements is a one-time $55.
Demos and pitching. A quick master helps a demo, a sync pitch, or a social clip sound finished.
Learning. In a plugin like Ozone you can open the suggested chain and see what it changed, which teaches you a lot about mastering.
Comparing options. You can try several masters of the same mix for very little money.
Where a human engineer shines
Judgment and feedback. A good engineer will tell you when the mix is the problem, for example a harsh vocal or a boomy kick, before mastering it. AI generally masters whatever you give it.
Context. An engineer can master a whole EP so the songs flow together, and can take a brief like "make it sound like it belongs next to this record."
Unusual material. Very dynamic acoustic recordings, experimental music, and genre-bending tracks benefit from someone listening with intent.
Revisions and accountability. You can talk to a person and ask for a change.
We haven't listed prices for human mastering because rates vary widely by engineer and we haven't verified a representative range. Ask engineers for quotes directly, and ask whether revisions are included.
A simple way to decide
Use AI mastering when:
it's a demo, a beat-tape track, or a frequent single release
your budget is under about $50 for the project
you want to learn by examining the processing
Hire a human when:
it's a flagship release, like an EP, album, or sync-ready track
you want feedback on the mix itself
the songs need to flow together as a set
A hybrid that works well: master with AI while you're developing a track, then send your strongest songs to an engineer, with your AI master included as a reference for what you liked.
How to get a good AI master
Finish the mix first. No mastering, human or AI, can rescue a muddy mix. Leave some headroom, and take any limiter off your master bus.
Export a high-resolution WAV at your project's sample rate.
Use a reference track in your genre. eMastered and Ozone can both work from one.
Run two services on the same mix. For example, compare LANDR's $10 master with the eMastered free preview or the Ozone trial.
Level-match before judging. Louder sounds better at first. Turn the louder master down until both play at the same volume, then choose.
Check on three systems: headphones, a phone speaker, and a car or laptop.
If it sounds harsh or thin, go back to the mix. RoEx Automix can give you a fast second opinion on mix balance.
The bottom line
AI mastering isn't a replacement for a great engineer, and a great engineer isn't necessary for every track. For most producers starting out, AI mastering is the practical default, and a human engineer is an investment you save for the releases that matter most. The skill worth building either way is the same: a mix good enough to master.
